Nadia Fairfax stepped out at the 2022 Penfolds Victoria Derby Day as a classic beauty on Saturday.

The 33-year-old socialite channeled her inner Jean Shrimpton in a black ensemble that resembled the 60s icon’s white shift dress she wore to the 1965 Derby Day.

Key tweaks modernised the outfit, but there was no mistaking that Nadia was inspired by the former supermodel, who left the fashion industry to run the Abbey Hotel in Penzance in her early 30s.

Nadia opted for a long, shapeless tunic over a matching skirt to give the impression of a dress as she kept the hem as scandalously high as her predecessor.

Jean had sparked controversy with her own Derby Day get-up as she stepped out with a hem that sat 4 inches above her knees, while Nadia’s was miles above it, hitting her at mid-thigh.

A nod to the model’s attire could also be seen in the golden button at the top of Nadia’s sleeveless shirt, an homage to the chunky pin that sat at the collar of Jean’s dress.

Similar to Jean, Nadia also opted for a modest, pointed heel – black instead of white – with additional black ties around her ankles to modernise the look.

The crowd of 1965’s Derby Day were scandalised by Jean’s blatant skirting of the rules as she appeared two hours late without gloves, stockings or a hat as was expected of her.

This year’s spectators will fortunately only ogle Nadia for her classic beauty as she added to the look with a large black clutch and elegant, tall white hat with a black bow.

Rather than the simple watch Jean accessorised with, Nadia clipped gold bracelets around her wrists and slipped rings over her fingers to match her golden button.

Her perfectly coiffed golden bob curled beautifully beneath her chin as she slicked on a simple but classy cat eye to tie together the 60s inspired outfit.

By today’s standards, Jean’s dress would be considered a modest length, and even the length of Nadia’s would not raise eyebrows.

However, during the 60s in conservative Australia, the English model and actress was tragically jeered and later bullied in the local press for her short garb.

The following year, she was pressured by her sponsors to don something more conservative in line with the dress code.

She attended in a three-piece grey suit with a straw hat, beige gloves and stockings, and a brown handbag, telling reporters of the time: ‘I think you should dress to please yourself. I feel Melbourne isn’t ready for me yet. It seems years behind London.’
