Channel 10 paid a fortune for rights to the Melbourne Cup, but it looks like the investment hasn’t exactly paid off.
Just over a million metro viewers tuned in to watch Gold Trip triumph at Flemington Racecourse – a record low for TV coverage of the race that stops the nation.
The five-city audience of 1.024 million was a drop of 345,000 from last year when 1.213 million tuned in. It is also the lowest television viewership for the Melbourne Cup since records began 20 years ago, reports the Herald Sun.

It was a serious blow for Channel 10, which reportedly paid $100million in 2019 to secure the broadcast rights for the Melbourne Cup Carnival until 2023.

The Sydney TV audience was 212,000, a significant drop from 310,000 last year.
Melbourne performed better for the free-to-air broadcaster, attracting 528,000 viewers, which was 8,000 more than 2021’s coverage.

The Brisbane audience fell dramatically from last year, attracting just 132,000 viewers compared to 205,000 in 2021.
Ratings in Perth and Adelaide were just as bad for Channel 10.
In the WA capital, only 73,000 punters bothered to watch – a drop from 89,000 in 2021. Meanwhile, just 79,000 Adelaideans tuned in.

The broadcaster’s online stream also fell, according to the Herald Sun, with 152,000 watching on 10 Play compared to 175,000 in 2021.
Channel 10 has seen a steady decline in viewers for its Melbourne Cup coverage since it scored free-to-air television rights for the Carnival in 2019.
Seven was previously the broadcaster for the Melbourne Cup dating back to 2002.
Many viewers used to watching the event on Seven forgot to change channels and accidentally tuned in for the Sydney races instead.
